How does the Deoxycholic Acid work to reduce the under-chin fat?

Deoxycholic acid works by destroying the fat cells, when it is injected into the under chin fat. This results in a slimmer sculpted jawline. Deoxycholic acid works best if you have moderate to severe fullness associated with submental fat.

Deoxycholic acid breaks down the membranes of the targeted fat cells which causes them to collapse. The broken down cells are then processed and expelled through your body's normal metabolic system. This can take several weeks.

How many treatments are needed?

Most people treated with Deoxycholic acid see visible improvements in the appearance of their chin profile after 2 to 4 treatments. Sessions are usually spaced about 8-12 weeks apart and a maximum of 6 treatments may be needed. Fat dissolving takes time, it is a long term investment which takes time to come to completion.

It's also important to understand that a Deoxycholic acid treatment is not a one-off treatment it takes time and commitment to get to the final result. Once the desired results are achieved, re-treatment is not expected as the removal of the fat cells is permanent.

What are the common side effects?

The majority of side effects are mild and temporary.
Swelling around the treatment area is due to your body responding to the Deoxycholic acid destroying the fat cells. More swelling usually means a better result with more fat destruction. The swelling usually lasts between 3-5 days.

Numbness in the treated area, this numbness is usually only slight and can last for a few weeks to a month after the treatment

Other common side effects include bruising (increased if any blood thinners have recently been used), pain and itchiness.

Ideally this treatment is best suited if you have good skin and good health and moderate to severe submental fat. It ranges from 0 (no localised sub-mental fat) to 4 (extreme submental convexity). The ideal patient for this treatment is someone who is a grade 2 or 3 on this scale.
